What is the O-Wind Turbine and how does it work?
O-Wind is a bladeless, 3D-omnidirectional turbine that captures chaotic urban winds from any direction (horizontal and vertical). It’s quiet, safe, wildlife-friendly, and designed for the funnelled wind in cities, where conventional turbines can’t perform.
What makes it different from traditional wind turbines?
Unlike traditional HAWTs and VAWTs that are optimised for low/steady wind, O-Wind thrives in turbulent/high-speed wind, making it ideal for “High Energy Potential Spots” where wind can be 3× faster and 27x more powerful than in open areas.
What are High Energy Potential Spots (HEPS)?
HEPS are places where wind is funnelled by large obstacles like tall buildings and hills. In these locations, wind can be 3x faster and 27x more powerful than in open areas, but also chaotic, constantly changing direction and speed. O-Wind is the first turbine designed to harness these particular conditions.
How do you find HEPS?
HEPS can be found with computational simulations. O-Innovations' partners can accurately simulate areas from single properties to full cities to find multiple spots. This is the first step recommended for Councils and estate owners, and it's readily available now. Get in touch if you would like to make an enquiry.
What size and output does it have?
The first city model is 2.2 m wide and mounted on a 6–10m pole. In the right locations, it can generate around 3,000 kWh per year. Other versions will be developed in due course.
What materials are used? Is it sustainable?
Our prototypes use recyclable composites. For mass production, we are targeting carbon-neutral processes and materials, ensuring O-Wind is as sustainable as the clean energy it produces.
When will it be available to buy?
The turbine is still in development. We aim to launch in 2027. You can join the waiting list on our website, and we’ll notify you as soon as it is available for purchase.
What about costs and ROI?
The expected return on investment is around 8–10 years, depending on site conditions. The turbine is designed for a lifespan of 15 years with minimal maintenance.
How do I get in touch for enquiries?
Simply use our contact form to send us a message. Whether you’re interested in partnership, media, research, or just ideas, we’d love to hear from you and will get back when relevant.
Individuals → Can I install it at home or in rural areas?
O-Wind is designed for HEPS - spots where wind is funnelled by tall buildings or hills. Most residential and rural areas don’t have these conditions, but if you think yours might, a wind assessment can help confirm.
Investors → Are you raising investment?
Yes. O-Innovations is open to equity investment to support development and scaling. If you are interested, please reach out via our contact form, and our team will be in touch.
Communities → Is it suitable for off-grid or community use?
Yes. In suitable windy spots, O-Wind can power lights, Wi-Fi, charging points, or other services. Every site is different, so a quick wind study is always recommended before installation.
Businesses → Can businesses use it?
Yes. Large buildings, campuses, and public sites are ideal. Companies without suitable sites can still sponsor units to be installed in public spaces.
Councils → Can councils use it?
Yes. The best locations for O-Wind will likely be in public urban areas. Councils can integrate it into smart-city infrastructure and provide public services (USB charging, Wi-Fi, lighting).
Distributors → Are there distribution or partnership opportunities?
Yes, but please note the product is not yet on the market. You can register interest now, and when O-Wind is ready for commercialisation, our team will reach out to discuss opportunities.
Students & Researchers → Is it possible to get technical data?
We cannot share protected design data. However, we welcome internships, coursework and collaboration projects in engineering, design, acoustics, business, law, and sustainability.
Media → Where can I find press material and media coverage?
O-Wind has been featured in 150+ media stories and displayed at COP28 and global museums. For press kits or interviews, please send us a message via our contact form.
