O-Wind

By O-Innovations

As the global population grows, our cities also increase in height and density, receiving less sunlight and experiencing more wind at ground level. To generate the necessary energy for our cities locally, we must harness this strong and chaotic wind. The O-Wind is the first truly omnidirectional wind turbine, specifically designed to address this challenge, making it perfect for urban use.

Omnidirectional

Making use of updrafts and downdrafts for a more continuous operation

Bladeless design

Free from risks associated with bladed turbines, bird friendly, silent and has no flickering effect.

Internal generator

Reduced vibration

Interactive

An interaction point for the public to use the energy via charging points, lights and WiFi hotspots, through which people can learn more about wider sustainability projects and how to do more for the environment

I was captivated by the simplicity of the design, relative to the enormous ambition of competing in the renewable energy sector. Developing ways to embed sustainability into society is an important challenge which will puzzle engineers for centuries, and these innovators show promise as early pioneers.

The application space of the technology in urban environments is really attractive and that would tend to be in mature markets, but equally of importance is its applicability in emerging markets, especially off-grid communities. This technology has got a place to be in all of those spaces

Dr Alan Lowdon, OBE

Only holding it in your hands and playing with it gives you a chance to understand what their new device actually does and how, if things go right, its ability to capture any random breezes will take urban energy harvesting to another level.

Dr Harry Hoster

Director of Energy Lancaster at Lancaster University

The future for cities is microgrids, it’s a matter of combining different technologies and O-Wind is a key point of that for cities

Innovate UK Grant

Read about how the Access to Finance Lancashire team helped the company gain angel investment from a group of investors, as well as an Innovate UK grant, which had a combined total value of £160,000, allowing for the company to further develop the technology and install its first pilot.
